HISTORY
The Boca Grande Swing Bridge is located in Placida, Florida. It is the only land link from Charlotte County to the three (3) barrier islands known as: North, Cole and Gasparilla Island. The Boca Grande Swing Bridge spans two 80-foot wide channels on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway at Placida Harbor. The bridge was built from 1952-1958 to replace a ferry service. The GIBA took over operations of the bridge's causeway and toll system in 1998. The GIBA is a State of Florida Independent Special District. |

BRIDGE FACTS
The steel swing span is 213 feet in length. At high tide Coast Guard boat clearances are: low point - 9 feet and the high point - 13 feet. It is one of the largest operational "swing bridges" in the State of Florida and the U.S. It was the only privately owned Toll Bridge in the state, until January 5 1998, when the Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority (G.I.B.A.) purchased it. The Boca Grande Bridge is the only Toll-Swing Bridge in Florida. It is manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. |

WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY
The GIBA has recently installed a high tech wireless weather station. This solar powered station measures wind speed, wind direction, barometric pressure, temperature, relative humidity, rainfall and solar radiation. This information provides boaters and residents "up-to-the-minute" weather conditions via the Internet. The station also has LIVE video display. You can view actual water levels as well as boat and vehicle trafic on the Internet via www.giba.us. |
PUBLIC ACCESS OF TECHNOLOGY
GIBA and Charlotte County have partnered up to make the new weather station technology available to the public. The "live" data measurements provide the Charlotte County Emergency Management Team the ability to calculate pre-storm or hurricane situations.
